$22 · Student Job: Program Assistant

Title: Programs Assistant Hourly Pay: $22/hr plus 4% vacation pay ($0.88/hr) Schedule: 30hrs/week Duration: 8 weeks, start June 1, 2022 (negotiable) Employer: Cowichan Neighbourhood House, Chemainus, BC Eligibility: current post secondary student status, aged 30 years or younger, and all conditions of the Canada Summer Job program (see eligibility below) Application Deadline: 5 pm, Wed, May 25, 2022 This position is ideal for a post-secondary student in Social Services, Community Development, Child & Youth Care, Education, or related fields. The position affords an opportunity to gain experience in the non-profit sector and develop skills related to community development, mentoring youth (9-18 years) and organizational administration (scheduling, promotion, and recruitment). Must be available for work 30 hours a week for at least 8 weeks. We can offer: * Free vulnerable sector check (Criminal Record Check) * Free training, including First Aid certification and crisis intervention (subject to Covid restrictions) * Better employment conditions than Employment Standards * Accommodating and flexible schedule * Employment personalized to help you with your educational and career goals Canada Jobs Eligibility Requirements: -- student between 19 and 30 years of age; -- registered as a Full-Time student in the previous academic year and intending to return to school on a Full-Time basis in the next academic year (2022-2023); -- a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (foreign students are not eligible); -- must be available for work 30 hours a week for at least 8 weeks -- must have reliable transportation to work -- and all other conditions of the Canada Summer Job program Job Description The student will work with the Programme Coordinator, and volunteers to help with our free food program, and will plan and run youth activities and events. Specific activities and schedule will be tailored to suit the successful applicant. The applicant may be required to work weekends. Typical responsibilities will include the following: Drop In Centre: Assist with to preparing and distributing food and other resources to people in need. Promote and communicate activities to the public via posters, Facebook, social media etc. Youth Program (9-18yrs): planning, promoting and supervising recreational, educational, and leadership activities for youth. During Covid restrictions, youth activities may include outdoor activities and events via Zoom. Qualifications & Assets The successful applicant will: -- Be able to develop a good rapport with Youth while maintaining appropriate boundaries -- Act as role model -- Possess communication skills; able to interact with a diverse population -- Sensitive to and respectful of cultural differences including local First Nations -- Be organized and able to work independently -- Be computer literate -- Have flexible time schedule -- fully vaccinated from Covid 19 -- willing to have a Vulnerable Sector Check The following are assets: -- Previous employment or volunteer experience in a non-profit organization -- Studying for a degree in a relevant field (e.g., Community Development, Social Services, Recreational Studies, Child & Youth Care, Education, Social Work, Child Psychology, etc.) -- Be enthusiastic and energetic with artistic, musical or athletic skills -- Food Safe & First Aid -- valid Driver’s License Supervision & Mentoring plan The successful student will be asked to develop a personalized learning/work plan. This will ensure that the position complements the student’s educational and skill development needs. The supervisors will use this learning/work plan to give constructive feedback. All activities will be with a supervisor or senior volunteer.
