Becoming a Festival of Trees Victoria Tree Sponsor!

Festival of Trees is a cherished community tradition and has become the unofficial kick-off to the holiday season in Victoria, now entering it’s 30th anniversary year.

Beginning on November 18th, the Bay Centre will be transformed into a lush forest of beautifully decorated trees to raise funds for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, all thanks to sponsors, local businesses, organizations and individuals. Guests can bring their loved ones, marvel in the magic of Victoria’s community spirit and vote for their favourite tree.

As we continue to be in challenging times locally and globally, consumers are looking more and more to spend their dollars with companies and organizations who care about the community. Show Victoria your community spirit by sponsoring a tree and raising funds for the only hospital in BC dedicated exclusively to caring for sick and injured children.

Visit www.bcchf.ca/fotyyj to view a sponsorship package and register your tree.

Victoria Beer Society Lager Than Life and Fresh to Death – October 8 & 9

The Victoria Beer Society is BACK! Lager Than Life takes place Friday, October 8th from 5:30-8:30pm, to celebrate the diverse range and style lagers have. For too long have lagers been outcast by their boastful IPA cousins, we believe it is overdue for Lagers to take centre stage, as we feature 20 beers from BC craft breweries. Fresh to Death, Victoria’s Fresh Hop Beer Festival, takes place Saturday, October 9th from 2-5pm as we showcase over 15+ fresh hop and specialty harvest beers. Rob Mangelsdorf, a certified Cicerone, leads our VIP event to dive deeper into four fresh hop beers to discuss different flavour profiles and what makes each beer unique. Tickets for VIP and General Admission are on sale now at victoriabeersociety.com.

In light of the evolving situation regarding COVID-19, we’ve made the difficult decision to move this year’s Economic Summit from the hybrid in-person event to completely virtual. This provides a safe, accessible opportunity for everyone to engage regarding important issues and trends.

Taking place October 27 and 28 online, the Summit will feature panel sessions, roundtables and keynote presentations:

-Carlota Sanz, Co-founder, Doughnut Economics Lab (DEAL) will challenge our thinking about economic development in the 21st century;

-BC Premier John Horgan will update us on the BC economic recovery plan;

-The ‘Food Doctor’, Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, Senior Director of the Agri-food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, will speak of food security and diversified opportunities in food production;

-Senior Economist, Susan Mowbray, partner at MNP, will highlight key findings in VIEA’s 7th annual Economic Report. (Everyone attending will receive free access to the digital Report – $195 value.)

Expert panelists will address vital questions related to the indigenous economy, mental health, climate change, technological disruption, the new PacifiCan Agency, the ‘blue economy’, and challenge our thinking regarding diversity and inclusion, assessing investment risk, and more!

Toonies for Tutoring – Ongoing

The Victoria Literacy Connection invites book clubs to participate in their Toonies for Tutoring fundraiser, an easy way for book clubs to become literacy heroes.

To participate, Book Club members donate a Toonie at every book club meeting; the Victoria Literacy Connection uses those funds to help provide literacy tutoring to a wide range of learners.  Reading challenges, “fines” for not reading the book, and silent auctions are just some of the fun ways book clubs can increase their donation.

Click on the link below to read more about the fundraiser and download a PDF.

The Victoria Literacy Connection provides free literacy programs for children, youth, and adults all over Greater Victoria.  1 in 5 Greater Victoria adults need better literacy skills to fully participate in society. And many children need better literacy skills to keep up in school.
