Cowichan Neighbourhood House 9806 Willow Street, Chemainus, BC ***An RCMP vulnerable sector information check is required to volunteer. Do you enjoy helping and socializing with your neighbours? Do you have a few hours a week to volunteer? Neighbourhood House has many opportunities to help others with whatever skills you have. Our motto is "Neighbours helping neighbours". We have three main programs -- Resource Centre, Healthy Food, & Youth. We are open 1-5pm Mon to Thur, and 11:30-5pm Fri, with youth nights Fri & Sat evenings. Our resource time is daily 1-3pm weekdays, where people can drop in to use our resources, socialize, play pool, enjoy free coffee & soup with bun, or get help and referrals. We also have a Friday Free Store 11:30-2:30, where we hand out free clothing, food, and household items. We also hold many free classes, workshops, community events, and other activities. Our "Zero Food Waste" accepts 2000lbs/month of food from local businesses and farmers -- food that would otherwise be discarded. There are many different volunteer roles available. Volunteers pick up, sort, clean, prepare, and sometimes package the food to give to others. Our "Soup-er Group" produces 250 cups of soup a week and freezes it for handing out to local families and individuals. We also hold free cooking classes and canning classes for adults and youth. To volunteer, contact us and we will set up a time to meet with you to see what areas fit your interests and skills. A criminal record check is required, but free with a letter from us. We also have free training opportunities that look good on your resume, such as free First Aid certification, BC Food Safe, and Non-Violent Intervention. SCHEDULE: Pick any days you like, between 1pm and 5:00pm Mon-Fri. Youth Nights Fri & Sat 5ish-8ishpm.
