This trainman's lantern goes by several names. Switch Lamp, Marker Lamp, Caboose Lamp. The conductor was in the old days the most important person on the train, as such he was the only one on each train that had one of theses types of lanterns. It was used when passing other trains, letting other engineers know when a train was off the main line or on the main line
This trainman's lamp is 16inchs tall by 9inches wide. The kerosene containers is solid with no leaks. The wick and the little turning handle that rises and lowers the wick works perfectly. The red light side that slides up to fill the lamp and lite the lamp are also in perfect condition. Each of the blue glass lenses are in great shape and none are broken.
